Why did Mormonism support polygamy THEN but not now?

Joseph Smith orignally stated that polygamy was REQUIRED for salvation/eternal life/heaven. But now the Mormon church disapproves of the practice. Could Joseph Smith have made an ERROR? If so, then he's not so infallible. Do you agree?
