How do you introduce a basket muzzle to a dog who's never had anything on his snout?

I took my dog and had him fitted for a basket muzzle yesterday afternoon. He's never had anything, like a Halter, Canny Collar or gentle leader, and doesn't like wearing the basket muzzle. It wouldn't be a permanent fixture, but he has to be muzzled when in the back yard for a little while. I don't know how to get him used to wearing it, other than just slapping it on and hoping he doesn't hurt himself with his back and fourth shaking, scratching and terrible dying-animal noises!
